I looked it up myself!

A reader thought I might have misspelled “dam”, so I looked it up myself.

I’d never really been sure. I associated it with connotations of Victorian Age English country squires, fancy guinea pigs, the horse side of things. That last category is one which was once very big, considering people don’t think of horses much anymore, except as pets.

But it’s “ARCHAIC: mother”.  That’s what the dictionary said. Dictionaries aren’t as much fun as they used to be.

It’s nice to know it’s archaic, because that’s a mood I like.
